Cesc Fabregas is still not more than 35 years of age and has decided to join Serie B club Como. The player with 110 caps for Spain with a trophy cabinet of great medals.
He is two years younger than Cristiano Ronaldo and the same age as Lionel Messi. To some this move looks a bit odd as he could have gone to a better level, but there are other reasons for this move.
The story of Como is of course one to look at as former Chelsea and England midfielder Dennis Wise is their CEO. He knows the World of football and must have had some big word that triggered the move for Cesc Fabregas.
Como ended last season 13th in Serie B as they try progress under the ownership of Indonesian tobacco company Djarum Group. They are also doing business in banking, beverages and technology
Djarum Group is also sponsor of Indonesian football and different other sports but of course mixed emoutions seeing such a brand in combination with one of the best footballers in this time makes it all look strange.
The club Como FC is some sort of a “pheonix” and has rised from the ashes several times. They have since 2017 build a new life on tobacco money. Their manager is Giacomo Gattuso a former legendary defender at the club in two periods spending time from 1989 to1995 and later from 1997 to 1999.
Cesc Fabregas will be the pivotal player at the club but an interesting set up also including English defender Luis Binks. The 20 year old England U.19 international had his first years in professional football with Tottenham and has since played for Montreal Impact and Bologna before joining Como.
Allesandro Gabrelloni is another player to notice as the forward has scored 51 goals in 146 games for Como and before a bit of traveller of lower league teams in italy.
We will see if this move makes Como FC some good or if it will just see Cesc Fabregas vanishing from the surface of football as the road back might be too long. This might be the final say of his football career as he also has taken part in the ownership side of the club and that might see him at the club long term as an investor to get them back up to Serie A.
