We all remember the dramatic happenings on the 16th of December last year as the Luton captain and Wales international Tom Lockyear collapsed on the field in a game vs. Bournemouth away.

Tom Lockyear is the heart and soul of Luton Town, joining the club back in 2020 from Charlton Athletic. The 29 year old has been on a very special journey with The Hatters taking all steps back up into the Premier League.

His class and talent has in many ways been overshadowed by this news regarding his heart condition, hit with the problems twice, as the incident on the 16th of December, came just a few months after he was stretched off, with similar problems. during the Championship play-off final vs. Coventry at Wembley, that saw them win promotion.

On 12 August 2023, Lockyer captained Luton in the club’s first Premier League match as they lost 4–1 to Brighton & Hove Albion on the opening day of the 2023–24 season. On 30 September, Lockyer scored his first Premier League goal in a 2–1 win at Everton. This was Luton’s first win in the competition and first top division win in 31 years.

With his good form and lively performances for Luton in the opening months of this special Premier League campaign, he was also called up to represent Wales again. On the 21st of November 2023, he played the full game vs. Turkey, ending in a 1-1 draw. This was his 16th cap, making his debut as far back as 2015, playing Denmark.

Tom Lockyear was discharged from hospital, having had an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator fitted, he began a period of rehabilitation at home. He was also present at The Vitality Stadium, on the 13th of March for the replay of this match, that was stopped, back in December. He met up with the briliant staff of people that was on guard when the incident happened as well as being the cover of the match programme that day, as it shows how the football family looks after each other when things like this happens.

What the future brings for Tom Lockyear is not yet decided, and at 29, turning 30 in December, he has earlier said that he hopes to return to the game of professional football if he feels it’s safe and recommended by medical experts.

We certainly hope that he remains in the game and goes on to other duties if his life on the pitch could have come to an end, surely his expertise, knowledge and experience must be regarded as special and potentially becoming of value in any other capacity if that become relevant for his future.
