Sweden did not qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics, being the silver medalist in the previous two events. A new generation is under way to take over from 240 capped wonder women Caroline Seger, top goalscorer Lotta Schelin and a number of other unique players in their teams of the past.

Sweden won the Bronze medal in the last World Cup, taking place in Australia last year, with a number of strong placements in earlier tournaments.

The most iconic of them all, Pia Sundhage, has been there since the beginning, being a player for so many years home in Sweden, scoring 285 goals in 341 league games for her teams, having three spells with Jitex and two at Hammarby among her teams, also a short period playing abroad in Italy and Lazio. Her international career lasted from 1975 to 1996, playing 146 times for Sweden, scoring 71 goals.

We should neither forget Hanna Ljungberg, a raw talent from young age, playing all her football in Sweden making her full international entrance in 1996, playing a total of 130 games and scoring 92 goals in those outings, the last coming in 2008.

The current generation of Swedish female players are on a shelf of high standards with a number of professionals playing abroad. Midfielder Filippa Angeldal, played for Man City until the end of last season. She has reached a tally of 56 caps and scored 14 goals in those full internationals. She was part of the World Cup squad in Australia, becoming a bronze medalist. She was also in the team winning silver in the 2020 Olympics.

Fridolina Rolfo is probably the most profiled player in the Swedish squad of today, playing club football for Barcelona, and currently in the team that won Champions League this year. She is on 85 caps, 29 goals. Their captain Kosovare Asolani (34) is a proven player and the oldest in the squad at the moment, have reached the impressive tally of 185 caps, so far scored 46 goals. She is currently on the books of AC Milan.

Sofia Jakobsson, Linda Sembrant and Magdalena Eriksson are other player who reached 100 caps or more. Sembrant is currently 37 years of age and still going strong.

Looking at the younger generation of players in the squad you have defenders, Anna Sandberg (21), and Hanna Lundkvist (21), midfielders, Hanna Bennison (21), My Cato (22) and Rosa Kafaji (20) and the forward Matilda Vinberg (21).

Johanna Rytting and Nathalia Bjorn both at Chelsea, experienced a glorious club season, winning the WSL. Bjorn came to Chelsea earlier in the year from Everton, Rytting joined Chelsea in 2022.

The current head coach is former Hammarby forward Peter Gerhardsson. Gerhardsson took over the team in 2017, and at the age of 64, still looking much forward to work on his team and get them close to a final again.
