Brentford are competing above their heights and doing so with so much ease, looking up and signing talents were others do not really look. The Bees manager Thomas Frank and his staff of special people are just so impressive. One player to speak about is Yoane Wissa.
You might have heard of the movie Moneyball based on a story in baseball, working on a limited budget to build a successful team, this is very much the act of Brentford as they are the equivalent outcome in English football.
Ivan Toney, Ben Mee and David Raya are just three grand examples of players who have seen their lives in football being part of a change and also having lengthen their careers in the top flight.
The three mentioned are players who have evolved as players while at Brentford. Ivan Toney joining from Peterborough after a misplaced spell at Newcastle, growing to become an England international. David Raya made his move to Arsenal and today seen as one of the better goalkeepers in Premier League.
Ben Mee coming in from Burnley, after spending most of his career at Turf Moor, once a graduate from Man City’s academy. The routine and experience of Mee, today 35 years of age, but still highly valued by Thomas Frank, as he do know he can call on the former Clarets player.

Yoane Wissa is one hidden gem, having signed for Brentford back in 2021. Wissa is born in France, but decided to play internationally for DR Congo. He can play either out wide in attack or being the main man up front. Picked up from Lorient in French football, growing to become one very interesting player in Premier League.
So far 121 league games played for Brentford, 37 goals scored, not at all bad for a player not really considered as that man up front in every type of game. A long-term injury suffered by new centre forward signing Igor Thiago during the 2024–25 pre-season, allowed Wissa to begin the regular season in the position. He started with three goals from four Premier League starting appearances and three goals across four appearances in November 2024 saw him nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month award. Wissa’s 37th Premier League goal, scored in a 2–2 draw with Manchester City on 14 January 2025, made him the club’s record Premier League goalscorer.
Wissa has been described as a player who “fits many different positions”, including winger, number 10 and forward. He has “pace and power”, is “a threat in behind”, “has good ability to take on players and create overloads” and “good pressing abilities”.
Wissa was the subject of an acid attack in July 2021, just before joining Brentford. He made a full recovery from emergency eye surgery. A 36-year-old woman was recently handed an 18-year prison sentence for assaulting Wissa and attempting to kidnap his child.
