John McGinn is the proven example on how you can take levels of football in steps and reach the very top as he this season is captaining his club team Aston Villa, as well as getting the captaincy of Scotland when Andy Robertson has been absent.

Aston Villa will this season be competing in Champions League action vs. Celtic, McGinn’s own favourite club, and by doing that showing every young talent that one or two setbacks in your football career should not stop you from fighting it through.

McGinn (29) was very much part of the Euro 2024 squad, playing in all three group games, unfortunately it was a difficult tournament for Scotland. One draw and two defeats, and it’s been a difficult number of months, but still the fight continues, despite another setback vs. Poland, looking at the last 15 games, only three wins to count, against minor nations such as Gibraltar and Cypros.

This has in no way disturbed John McGinn who has been a captain of example, for his club team Aston Villa, reaching the ultimate goal last season, finishing 4th in Premier League and qualified for Champions League. They only had Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool in front of them.

Despite being a massive Celtic fan, his journey into professional football had another route, coming through at St. Mirren. A club based in Paisley, in close distance to Glasgow.

Looking at John McGinn’s career stats you find a route and pattern often seen as a good travel in football, coming through and into the first team at a club as teenager, as well as being seen by the national scouting system and brought on to the interntional youth schene as the progression at both club and nation level is take care off in the best way possible.

He impressed at St. Mirren, taking his next step, moving to Hibs in 2015, establishing himself at the highest level in Scotland, before he was spotted at Aston Villa, moving south in 2018. He could have joined Celtic, but instead moved to Villa, at the time a 2nd tier team, getting massive and great experience being part of a promotion campaign as well as pushing for more and finally getting that chance in Champions League this season.

Watching the journey of John McGinn is fantastic, as it gives a special and unique insight to how a football career can be build as you gradually take your step one by one and at the age of 29, posssibly getting to a point were you are at the very top, being committed and serious about your football.
