Hamza Choudhury (26) has been with Leicester since the age of 7, making his full league debut at 20. He showed early on that he could cope with senior level league football being on loan at Burton Albion a year before his debut at Leicester, playing 26 league games over two seasons for The Brewers.
So far played 87 league games for Leicester, 34 of them last season, also being part of the captains team under the management of Enzo Maresca. Despite having off field difficulties last season, being investigated by FA for wrong social media posting, and later fined for drink driving, Maresca decided to show him trust and play him and in a way ignore those happenings.
Choudhury has also been shown great trust by new manager Steve Cooper, given the captaincy in the last pre-season friendly vs. Lens, even if he fielded players such as Harry Winks and Wilfred Ndidi. Ndidi is the captain of the Nigerian national team, and prevously held the captaincy at Leicester, Harry Winks was captain earlier in pre-season, when Hamza Choudhury didn’t make the starting line-up.
Looking back, the progress of Hamza Choudhury also led to a chance to play for England at U.21 level, adding up a total of 7 caps, between 2018 and 2019. He really shined in a number of games in Premier League under Brendan Rodgers. His tackling ability and defensive work in midfield was at times brilliant. But in some way never able to really establish himself as a cemented and trusted member of a starting eleven.
He signed a new and long term deal with the club last year, having a contract running until the summer of 2027, and in a way seen over the years as a squad member to call on in any possible way, doing work at right back, central midfield and also as a centre back.
This is a perfect player to have around for a manager as he can trust him to do certain jobs without being to eager to play him week in and week out as a regular starter, also often a good option to have on the bench as he can come in to save points with his defensive skills.
Leicester former manager Brendan Rodgers made his mind up about Hamza Choudhury, giving him the opportunity to join Watford on loan. he was out during the 2022/23 season and had no say in the relegation happening for Leicester that season, playing 36 league games for The Hornets a tier below.
He is homegrown, a local born player and he has shown loyalty to Leicester, but still it looks as if no one really rates him as highly as he possibly would have liked himself. Steve Cooper dif surprise us, seeing Hamza Choudhury lead out the team vs. Lens. The game ended in a 0-3 loss, Hamza Choudhury left the field after 81 minutes, being substituted with Boubakari Soumare, and in real had a troubled day in this very crucial game.
Would be lovely to see Hamza Choudhury back to his ever best, let’s hope he will get the chance to show his worth and for those who have written him off, prove them all wrong.
