Dejan Kulusevski was told the girl he liked was to old for him, a few years later she moved with him to Spurs.
In an interview with The Players Tribune, he said; “When I came here, I don’t think many people in England expected much from me. To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect from myself either. As a footballer, I was in a bad place”,
The Swedish star went from Italian Juventus to Tottenham in January 2022. A transfer that led to tears at home. Kulusevski wanted out and his agent announced on the eve of the January window that Tottenham could be a possibility.
“I said: Yes, we’re going. When is the next flight? He said it would be an hour and I ran to the room and started packing. I was there with my girlfriend, Eldina, and I started to cry. Then she started to cry. We didn’t know why, there was just so much happening at once. We kissed, cried more and then I went to the airport. There was no chance of me missing that flight,” he writes.
Kulusevski says he quickly realized how tough his stay in Tottenham was going to be. “The Premier League goes 300 times faster than any other league in the world and at the first training session I didn’t understand anything. The players flew past me, Conte screamed and pointed. I had joined Spurs on an 18-month loan, with an option to buy, as they say, so if I was going to get a permanent deal, I had to perform. But my first match was a disaster,” recalls the player. Tottenham led against Southampton and Kulusevski got a pass on the field to secure the victory. When he came on, the score was 2–1 to Spurs, but it eventually ended 2–3.
He says that there have been a series of ups and downs to get to where he is today. On the way he met Eldina Ahmić, who has also played football for a number of years. Kulusevski spotted her on the football field, but her teammates thought she was too old for him. Nevertheless, he followed her on Instagram and eventually sent a message. “You see, on the pitch I have confidence. I am “The Man”, almost too confident. But talking to a girl? Then I’ll be a shy boy from Sweden again and I can’t do anything about it. When I messaged her I decided to talk about football.”
The Spurs star, who is also 23 years old, wrote to the 29-year-old woman and soon received a reply. The two exchanged the first messages in 2020 and are now getting married. “Things happened fast, but long story short, that girl will soon be my wife. Eldina was captain and number 10 at Brommapojkarna and she is an incredible player. We have been together for four years now. How we met is still a miracle to me, no one can write a script like life itself.”. He thanks both Spurs fans and his wife-to-be for their support. The player’s deal with Tottenham, which was made permanent last year, runs until June 2028.
