This must perhaps be the free rider of all time. A miracle in Milan, a secured World Cup ticket, and then being applauded by 50,000 in Oslo – almost without having been there. Unreal, says RBK goalkeeper Sander Tangvik.
Sander Tangvik sensed peace and no danger when he completed his last RBK training session before some welcome days off last Wednesday.
However, it was not to be a day off.
The phone rang, and the trip to the cabin had to be politely canceled, when the RBK goalkeeper was hurriedly called up to his first national team squad.
– I am proud and humbled that I got that message. It was straight home to pack, and then they arranged plane tickets, Tangvik tells TV 2.
And with that, the Trøndelag player traveled straight into one of the greatest Norwegian football parties of all time – without actually having to lift a finger.
– It was incredibly big and a bit surreal. I made sure to enjoy every moment and every minute. I think it is something I will remember for the rest of my life, grins the 22-year-old.
– You become an “outsider”
Because suddenly – and completely without warning – Tangvik was in his first A-national team squad – a squad that was ahead of the country’s two most important matches in well over 20 years.

Although RBK’s goalie is starting to become more experienced in the game, he admitted that he was a little nervous.
– You are a little nervous, but the media has previously described the team as a nice bunch and I can really confirm that. I was very well received. I really saw a team with good unity. It was cool to see, says Tangvik about his first meeting with the rest of the team.
– You become an outsider in a way in the group. You are new and don’t know many people. I was lucky, since I knew quite a few people from before. Of course that helped a little, he continues.
In the heat for the first time – and at the best possible time, Tangvik had to accept that there were some messages.
– There was a lot of “it’s not so bad to come in at this time”. I completely agree, laughs the player from Trøndelag, who sums up his first week with the national team this way:
– Absolutely magical. Unreal. It has been a lot of fun to be a part of. These are memories for a lifetime, simply. It has given me motivation to keep going.
Because after watching Norway beat Estonia 4–1 at home at Ullevaal, Tangvik’s planned cabin trip was replaced with San Siro in Milan.
– First and foremost, a powerful stadium. We trained there the day before. It was cool to get there, see and be out on the mat. It was a cool experience. I’m glad I got to be out there before it’s demolished, says Tangvik.
– The free pass of all times in Norwegian football?
– Ha-ha, I understand that you can say that, yes. I guess I am. I had a lot of experiences and a lot of impressions in a few days, you could say that, smiles the Rosenborg player.
After the party in Oslo, a proud, but slightly ill, Tangvik returned to Trondheim.
