Man City players accustomed to winning have wasted an unusually large amount of points recently, and in the Champions League it has also been tiring. On Saturday, the trend continued with full force.
Pep Guardiola’s injury-hit crew looked to be on their way to victory for a long time. Half of the first half had been played when the season’s twelfth Haaland goal in the Premier League was a fact.
Erling Haaland was released behind Brighton’s defensive line and finished past goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. The Dutch last chance got the ball, but Haaland was able to lunge forward and poke it over the line in a fight with a Brighton defender.
At the end of the half, Haaland could have scored one or two more goals, but the finish was too weak. The first hit the post.

In the second half, the home team turned the game around. Substitute Joao Pedro first equalized at 1-1 against a clumsy City defense that failed to clear the ball out of the danger area.
Afterwards, the TV images showed Haaland roaring in anger and frustration at the turn of the match.
Then another substitute, 23-year-old Matthew O’Riley, scored the winning goal and sent his own fans into the sky. Again, the visitors’ defense was weak.
Haaland received a yellow card after a wrestling match with an opponent. City manager Guardiola again had to compose a starting line-up where several key names were missing due to injuries. The Spaniard sent the uncapped 19-year-old Jahmai Simpson-Pusey onto the pitch from the start in central defence.
