Malmo FF: A Legacy in Swedish Football

Malmo FF is a club of great tradition in Swedish football, being a major winner of domestic league trophies. Malmo is from the Scania region in Sweden, in the south, close to Denmark. A bridge connecting the two countries together.

Malmo FF are the current leaders of Allsvenskan. They have a 5 points gap to Hammarby in second place. They will play in Europa League this season.

Over the years a grand supplier of special talent to the Swedish national team. The club must also have great memories of fantastic World Cup tournament competitions. In the 1958 World Cup, Malmo FF had two players in the squad, goalkeeper Tore Svensson and defender Prawitz Oberg. None of them played in the final, but still part of a very special day in Swedish football history.

Winners of the Swedish Allsvenskan 23 times, hunting their 24th title this season. A great tradition of winning titles, and a history influenced by the British. Welsh man Bert Turner is the first to acknowledge, doing a double act in 1951 and 1953. Winning Allsvenskan and The Swedish Cup.

Roy Hodgson and Bob Houghton are two other British managers with great success at Malmo FF.

Bob Houghton taking the club to the 1979 European Cup final. Also a winner of Allsvenskan 3 times, 1974, 1975 and 1977. Swedish Cup winner 4 times, 1974, 1975, 1979 and 1980. Houghton returned to Malmo FF in 1990, staying until 1992, but no titles to count in that period.

Roy Hodgson was very much part of the same era in Swedish football. A coach at Halmstad BK, bringing home the Allsvenskan title in 1976 and 1979. Later having spells at Oddevold and Orebro, before taking over Malmo FF in 1985, staying to 1989. A smashing record, winning Allsvenskan in all his seasons, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989, 5 titles. A Swedish Cup winner in 1985 and 1989.

Malmo FF is owned by it’s members and have no private ownership. This is fundemental and what football is all about according to the fans of the club.

Malmo FF’s most iconic player all time must be Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He was brought up in the area and at Malmo FF from the mid 90’s until he left in 01. He signed for Ajax, and from that that point, never looked back. Zlatan’s records in football speaks for itself.

You have other players with a grand life at the club. Bo Larsson is one special man in the history books, scoring 119 goals in 302 Allsvenskan appearances. Staffan Tapper is another major man to notice. Captaining the team in the 1979 European Cup final. Playing all his senior career with Malmo FF, from his debut in 1968 until his last game in 1979. A total of 220 Allsvenskan appearances, scoring 42 goals. His father Borje Tapper was also a notable Malmo FF player. His record for the Swedish national team is one special, scoring 7 goals in 4 appearances.

Krister Kristensson must also be mentioned. A robust and steady defender with 38 full caps for Sweden, participated in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. Kristensson played most of his career for Malmö FF. He played 626 games for the club from 1963 to 1979. Winning Allsvenskan seven times and Svenska Cupen five times.

There are so many great players at this club, so many to look up. One that must be mentioned is former Rangers midfielder Robert Prytz. A hero of the Malmo FF 79 team. Only 19 years of age when playing in this European Cup final. Prytz continued his career all into his 40’s. Turning out for several clubs in the Scottish lower leagues. Prytz had a good professional career, also having spells playing in Switzerland, Germany and Italy.

Malmo FF is an institution in Swedish football. The only club in this country to date playing in a European Cup final. A steady performer in European football before and after this historical final. They are a club qualified for one of the major European tournaments season in and season out.
