Ashley Young (39) is still very much part of top flight football and today among the oldest players to appear in Premier League action this season. Young is a few months younger than West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who is the oldest player in the league, Ashley Young the second oldest and James Milner number three.
Young’s tally of assists are the highest among defenders in Premier League this season and he looks sharp and controlled as Sean Dyche continues to pick him for games.
His contract at Everton expires at the end of the season, and his future is of course in the air, but with the form he appear to be in, why shouldn’t his career continue, hopefully for a number of years as he looks a proper Premier League player right now.
His top flight journey in football started at Watford, being promoted to the highest level with The Hornets, joining them as a 10 year old. He progressed and joined Aston Villa in 2007 for a fee of £8million, a new record for the club regarding incoming transfers.
Young became a regular England international during his days at Villa Park, drawing attention from even bigger clubs. and in 2011, Man Utd came in for him, using £17million to get his signature. He was part of the team that won the Premier League in 2012/13, the last season of Sir Alex. Later a league winner in Italy with Inter.
When returning to Aston Villa in 2021, few expected him to make more moves in football as he was coming to an age were most footballers decides to call it a day, but he was not eager to quit and when his contract at Villa Park expired, Sean Dyche showed his cleverness and signed Young up, to join him at Goodison Park.
He is on a total of 38 league games for Everton so far, looks to be many more, with an interesting chat to be taken next summer when his contract is up and possibly a new chapter can be written, and not surprised if he continues for one more year at Everton celebrating his 40th birthday on the 9th of July next summer.
