Darren Ferguson (52) and Nigel Clough (58) are two managers in EFL football. Ferguson being in charge of Peterborough and Clough having the same job at Mansfield. But they are far from reaching the fame and fortune of their fathers Brian (Clough) and Sir Alex (Ferguson)
Both Darren and Nigel are exeperienced men in football management, as well as ex professionals having a past at places such as Manchester United (Ferguson), Forest, Liverpool and Man City (Clough).
This season they are both battling for promotion, Ferguson from League One with Peterborough, Clough from League Two with Mansfield. Ferguson is in charge of Peterborough for the fourth time in his career, being in and out of that job since 2007, he has in between his times with The Posh, being in charge of Preston and Doncaster.
Peterborough is a club to admire. Fighting on with limited funds, but still digging out results of great respect, last week crowned winners of the The EFL Trophy defeating Wycombe Wanderers 2-1 in the Wembley final.
Peterborough are 4th at present in League One, and could reach Wembley for a 2nd time this season if they manage to get through to the play-off final.
Nigel Clough is fighting his battle with Mansfield as they are currently 3rd in League Two, far below Stockport, and in reach of Wrexham in 2nd place, but to keep a close eye on MK Dons just two points behind, but with one more game played.
A bit strange to see the sons of two of the most famous managers in English league history, fighting on far from the arena of their fathers battles, but still fascinating, as the love for football continues.
Nigel Clough had a glorious career as a player, and in many ways outplayed his father Brian, adding up so many games for Forest, all of them played under his father, but still standing tall on his own adding up more England caps on u.21 and full level. His time at Liverpool was also one to cherish, and also in the top flight with Man City later on, before moving into management with Burton Albion, taking the club into EFL and climbing to Championship level. He later had his years at Derby and later at Sheffield United, before bringing on this Mansfield project, also a success so far.
Darren had a more modest career as a player, being brought into the first team frame by his father at Man Utd, but also sold on, to Wolves. He later played for Sparta Rotterdam and later Wrexham in the years from 1990 to 2008. A career of much respect as he added up 310 league games in eight seasons at Racecourse Ground, playing 117 times in league football with Wolves, 14 for Sparta and 28 games in the top flight with Man Utd.
We wish them both all of luck as they now are fighting their own battles for promotion, respect and further progress as Ferguson and Clough fights on lower league football.
