David Nish became the most expensive player in English football ever, when he moved from Leicester to Derby just weeks after the season kick off. The fee of £225.000 came to good use as Frank Worthington and Dennis Rofe became two additions at Leicester, being part of an iconic setting at Filbert Street.

Mike Bernard made his switch from League Cup winner Stoke to join Everton, at the time also signing Joe Harper from Aberdeen. Two major moves, Bernard joining for a fee of £140.000, while Harper had an even higher price tag at £180.000.

Alan Ball became the transfer of the season as his record move from Everton to Arsenal, £220.000, grabbed the headlines. Arsenal were The Double winners from the season before and of course expected to build on their success. Arsenal ended runners-up in the FA Cup and 5th in the League. They reached the quarter finals of the European Cup, losing to Ajax, who won the tournament.

Malcolm Macdonald and Kevin Keegan both became profilic goalscorers in the top flight, but both come from lower tiers in this season, Macdonald signed from Luton to Newcastle for £180.000, Keegan joining Liverpool from Scunthorpe for only £33.000.
