No one really had any thought of Jurgen Klopp stepping down at Liverpool. When this news broke, it was a shocking message to recieve, as his status at the club is up there with Pep at Man City, Sir Alex at Man Utd, Arsene Wenger at Arsenal and Brian Clough at Forest.
A lot of speculation of course, but still no real explenation for the move from the popular German as he also did the same at Borussia Dortmund, stepping down without a purpose, looking carefully at what could come next.
What Jurgen Klopp achieved at Borussia Dortmund was done in the most clever way, having players such as Ilkay Gundogan and Robert Lewandowski among his recruits, being signed from the shadows of top football, and of course bringing them to the highest level in the world of football.
The job done at Liverpool must also be described as phenomenal winning the major trophies in the game since being appointed in October 2015. He build a special team out of the ashes left behind from Brendan Rodgers, adding special quality in players such as Andy Robertson, Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane.
Jurgen Klopp made his announcement late January, explaining it all as he is afraid that he will be lost for energy some day and wanted to step down at a time when he was still on top.
We all know from the past that legendary managers such as Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan and Kenny Dalglish all of them stepping down.
What comes as a a bit of a surprise is the fact that Jurgen Klopp not long ago signed a new deal until June 2026, so then to see him stepping down almost 2 years before, makes it easy to start a speculation.
A number of former players and pundits has of course having their own thoughts of reason behind such a decision, one is Thierry Henry, believing the pressure and amount of work in this position, honestly brings you to this decision. Jurgen Klopp is the longest serving manager in Premier League at this moment. Other speculations has been made regarding the current owners at Liverpool not backing Jurgen Klopp enough, to be able to compete with other clubs.
We all know that football managers of the past demanded full control, having the last say on most matters, Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola are the two with most success in football today and they looks to be in 100% control, but as we have seen at other clubs, maybe the new and modern football manager looks to be more of a team player and organizer of a group, than doing all the major jobs and decisions himself.
The way forward for football clubs in the future looks to be more difficult and we will probably see the best managers moving into international jobs, with Klopp’s home nation Germany said to be among interesting parties. Pep Guardiola was earlier linked with Brazil, and we have seen other club managers going this way. Luciano Spalletti is one recent and grand example of such, taking the Italy job.
Jurgen Klopp makes no secret of his desire to nurse forward young talent at Liverpool, giving a lot of youngsters a chance as we have seen Harvey Elliott, Trent Alexander Gordon, Curtis Jones and Conor Bradley all taking their opportunities.
In a way of course sad to see Jurgen Klopp leave Liverpool, but everything comes to an end, hopefully he will leave with a couple of trophies finding it’s way to Anfield after this season. The first major one could be in as early as Sunday the 15th February, being the favourites in the Carabao Cup final vs. Chelsea.
