For the longest time, it’s been almost sacrilegious to compare Lionel Messi to Pele and Diego Maradona for the simple reason of the former not having a World Cup medal.
Older football fans will point to Pele’s heroics in 1958 and 1970, and Maradona’s role in securing the World Cup in 1986, as evidence that the duo are the greatest to ever have played the sport. For 15 years, this was a hard stance to argue against – even as the genius of Messi made itself more apparent with each passing season.
