Heritage NASL; Liverpool 1972-73 League Winners

NASL became a home for many of the Liverpool players being in and around Anfield at that time. Regulars in the team during that 1972-73 league winning season such as Alec Lindsay, Steve Heighway, Ian Callaghan, Chris Lawler, Peter Cormack, Chris Lawler and Tommy Smith. They all had their share in the first league win since 1965-66.

Seven of these regulars all had a life in NASL or US/Canadian pro soccer, with different clubs in their careers.

Heritage NASL; Washington Diplomats

Washington Diplomats were a team in the NASL from 1974 to 1981. They had some very special managers and players. Dutch favourites Johan Cryuff, Wim Jansen and Gus Hiddink played for The Dips. A great number of British players also starred in the all read kit.

Johan Cruyff played for The Dips in 1980 and 1981. Hiddink was at the club in 1978. Looking at other greats you will of course not forget their coach Gordon Bradley. Bradley was in charge from 1978 to 1980.

Heritage NASL; Eusebio

Eusebio made his name in Portugal as a notorious goalscorer for club Benfica. A total of 317 goals in 317 league appearances is a massive tally and just a fantastic score rate, few or almost no one have a chance to reach in modern football. He also shined in the 1966 World Cup, winning Bronze with Portugal. He played 64 times for his nation, scoring 41 goals.

He dominated during his time with Benfica, winning the domestic league 11 times. European Cup winner in 1961-62, and ending runners-up twice, in 1962-63 and 1967-68. He was one of the major names of European soccer during the 60’s and early 70’s, as we look up his latter years as a player, turning out for NASL teams such as Boston Minutemen, Toronto Metros-Croatia and Las Vegas Quicksilvers. He also had spells at New Jersey Americans and Buffalo Stallions.
