Gerd Muller one of the greatest goalscorers of all time has died. The former Bayern Munich icon and West Germany international was 75 years of age, born on the 3rd of November 1945. Another great of those fantastic years of football has left us and we are sitting back with some great memories.
Muller had allready seen domestic success when we learned to know him at that World Cup in 1970, scoring 10 goals, being the topscorer, and of great importance sending England out of the tournament with the winning goal in the 108th minute.
Embed from Getty ImagesMuller was at the end of most great attacks being played up from goalkeeper Sepp Maier, libero Franz Beckenbauer and often also played forward by midfielder such as Wolfgang Overath and Gunter Netzer when they appeared on international schene.
After fifteen years with Bayern Munich had played 453 league games and scored 398 goals, adding up 68 goals in 62 internationals including that World Cup winning final in 1974 v. Netherlands, he set his sight on a move to NASL and Fort Lauderdale Strikers, he continued to score and helped the club to the 1980 Soccer Bowl final, scoring 38 goals in 71 games for the iconic Florida club.
Embed from Getty ImagesAfter returning to Germany he worked for Bayern Munich unitil his retirement. Muller was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2015. We have those great memories of one of the great goalscorers of all time, a real gentle person as well, being fondly remembered from all team mates, opponents and the football family in all.
Again a sad day in history of football, RIP Gerd Muller.
