Goalkeepers are important in football and over the years you have seen some fantastic performances in the Premier League. Looking at the crop of today you certainly have a flourishing group of players. They come in all sizes and from all over the World, even Isle of Wight have one representative. Simon Moore of Sheffield United has an international record playing for the island in non-FIFA internationals.
You have the Ederson’s, Schmeichel’s, De Gea’s and Alisson’s who we all are rated highly and those we of course knows from the big games, but there are almost 60 goalkeepers listed in Premier League. Most clubs have three in their squad, but at Chelsea and Wolves they have listed only two with academy options as the single solution if injuries occur.
Liverpool, who are at the top, had to see their first choice Alisson Becker missing a number of games, but in his absence Adrian has done well. They also have a third choice that grabbed headlines during the summer, Andy Lonergan, joining as a free agent after being released by Middlesbrough, after he last appeared in goal, on loan, at Rochdale last season.
Liverpool are not the only club to have some very experienced covers, names that earlier were seen as clear first choice alternatives. Three English internationals, Joe Hart, Scott Carson and Alex McCarthy are listed among those, representing Burnley, Man City (loan) and Southampton.
You also have players making surprising “comebacks”, after being a bit in the shadows for a number of years, either being injured or not the first choice, one great example this season is Tim Krul. He is back in Premier League action with Norwich City, and the former Newcastle and Dutch international has been monumental. Despite The Canaries being in a bit of a struggle, Krul’s goalkeeping has been outstanding. Still not more than 31 and returning to the limelight, and to be frank, still have the best years in front of him as goalkeepers tends to live longer in the game.
Brighton are of course a team to take notice of so are Newcastle, and looking a bit deeper you will find two outstanding goalkeepers in Mathew Ryan and Martin Dubravka. These two goalkeepers might not be that known by the regular follower of the Premier League, but they are both outstanding. They also shear a detail to count, both are first choice for their countries, Ryan (Australia) and Dubravka (Slovakia).
You also have some interesting young players who are really making their mark. Bournemouth’s new first choice Aaron Ramsdale and Southampton’s Angus Gunn. Both could be seen as contenders for that England job and pushing Everton’s Jordan Pickford.
Despite Arsenal not being in the form fans would like them to be, their German in goal, Bernd Leno is showing stuff that makes him one of the best in the business. The former Stuttgart and Bayer Leverkusen shot stopper is still only 27 and this season could give see him among those rated “top of the pops”.
Goalkeepers needs a number of games and a steady period, before they can be counted “reliable and classy”, and without one, you will struggle in the Premier League.
