Liverpool struggling to keep pace with red-hot Chelsea in Premier League title race

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have been one of the strongest sides in the Premier League so far this campaign and it isn’t a huge surprise to see the Reds fighting it out at the summit of the division

As of December 20th, Klopp’s men are six points behind runaway leaders Chelsea but more importantly have a four-point advantage over fifth placed Tottenham Hotspur - arguably Liverpool's main objective this campaign

On current form, Liverpool have what it takes to win the title offensively but deficiencies at the back could hinder their chances of silverware once again.

Liverpool’s defence has been exposed on more than one occasion this season and their frailties have contributed to their demise in recent weeks. Klopp’s side have conceded 20 goals in 17 league games so far this season, keeping just five clean sheets all campaign.

However, recent performances have indicated a significant improvement at the back, with back-to-back clean sheets in away fixtures for the first time since January 2015. If the Reds continue to improve and keep things tight defensively, their Premier League title hopes will receive a huge boost.

At the end of the day, defence wins championships and that is why Chelsea have romped clear at the top of the table in recent times.

New manager Antonio Conte, previously in charge of the Italy national side, has focused on building an impenetrable defensive unit and the Blues have reaped rewards from this change in system and style.

Chelsea have won their last 11 Premier League games in a row, scoring 25 goals whilst conceding just two – keeping an incredible eight clean sheets in the process.

The Blues are looking invincible right now and their recent form has helped to pile the pressure on Liverpool and the chasing pack.

Offensively, Liverpool’s front three is as good as Chelsea’s unit – if not better.

With the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané terrorising opposing defenders, the Reds have enough quality to blow teams out of the park.

While Spain star Diego Costa is by far and away the best striker in the Premier League right now.

The supporting cast – with the exception of Eden Hazard – are a class below and Chelsea may fall short if the rest of the top flight figure out how to defend against Conte’s new-look system.

As of December 20th, Liverpool are valued at 11/2 to lift the title in bet365 Premier League betting markets and it is difficult.

To bet against Klopp’s men despite Chelsea’s early season form. The Blues will have their blip and when they do, Liverpool will be ready to pounce.

In Klopp, the Reds have a truly relentless manager and he simply won’t allow his side to slip up in the title race if the crown is on the line.

With 41 goals in just 17 league games.

Liverpool’s attacking unit could secure a maiden Premier League title if they shore up at the back. Defence wins championships but in Liverpool's case, attack may just be the best form of defence
