England in VAR trouble, but who should play for Three Lions

DATE: 29.03.2018 - SOCCERVOICE - BLOG - SEASON 2017-18

Gareth Southgate is not happy with VAR at the moment, but we believe he should have other thoughts on his mind

We love to see England do well, but in the day of VAR, we cannot really agree with people like Alan Shearer, Gary Lineker and Gareth Southgate when it goes against their team.

The fact that the VAR is getting the situation 100 % correct is what matters. This is the way forward and it works well in other sports, and in the game between England and Italy it was no problem with the VAR system at all.

Watching the game, everything was very much under controll and VAR never disrupted anything. The problem with footballers, fans, pundits and managers, they want to win, even if the ref is doing a fatal error as long as it is going in their favour.

Jamie Vardy scored England's goal in the 27th minute. Three Lions were 1-0 up until the 88th minute when Italy correctly, with VAR, was given a penalty. Insigne scored from the penalty spot.

Gareth Southgate should not worry too much about VAR, but instead start building a team that can "go places" in Russia. England is one of the countries that almost qualify for every World Cup and has just missed three in the last 60 years. 1974, 1978 and 1994.

Southgate should be more concerned with his team selection and start building a solid formation, a solid first 11, and really decide on who he will play and what system to use.

England has a number of stars and they should be in the team. Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, Kyle Walker, Ashley Young and Jamie Vardy should all start, but behind them there are not easy to find consistent players.

They are the players that should be first on the paper for Southgate, the rest is down to more than thirty players to chose from. No one expects England to win the World Cup, and they are far from it, but Southgate should use the friendlies better than he does at the moment.

The rotation is so huge that even the players that should be picked first are not always playing, so that is a shame as well. Hopefully Southgate will start consentrating on his team selection and forget VAR, because some day he will be in favour when England gets an error fixed.
