Fun with "Mini Cooper's" at "The New Lawn",
Forest Green Rovers FC
DATE: 04.08.2016 - SOCCERVOICE - NEWS - SEASON 2016-17
EFL starts the
season this weekend. Forest Green will this season be playing in
League 2 after coming up through the play-off's.
This is their first season ever in the EFL. They have reached the
play'off finals in their last three seasons, and finally this time
they managed to get promoted after a 3-1 win v. Tranmere Rovers.
The club comes from the small "village town" Nailsworth in
Gloucestershire. Just around five thousand people lives here, and
with a capacity at their home grown "The New Lawn" of around the
same numbers, you might get a seat.
The Stroud district, where Nailsworth belongs, has a population of
more than 100 000, so Forest Green have fans also around and about.
Their manager and the one making history was Mark Cooper.
Mark Cooper is the son of former England and Leeds United defender
Terry Cooper. Mark is the father of Charlie, who is also involved at
the club, playing in midfield. Charlie Cooper played last season on
loan from Birmingham, and during the summer made the move permanent.
Forest Green is a project for "The Mini Cooper's", but the father
and grandfather, Terry is also very much enganged, following up from
the stands with excitement and probably also proud to see such a
family affair taking place in this EFL adventure in the South West
Terry Cooper is far from the heights of his own career, playing in
the 1970 World Cup quarter finals for England. Winning league and
cup trophies with Leeds United. After his time at the top, Cooper
has also been involved in lower league football as a manager and
TC was a manager at Birmingam, Bristol City and Exeter, with Mark
also being there as a player, so the family is one living for
football. Mark Cooper has a long career in football, and before
taking charge of Forest Green, he had spells at clubs such as Notts
County, Swindon and Peterborough.
The colours of Forest Green, is of course green, with a bit of black.
The nickname is "Green Devils", and what can we expect from the team
from the smallest town ever to host EFL football.
As for the bigger clubs, pre-season is busy. pre-season games have
been perfect, winning all four, and especially the 2-0 win v. League
1 side Bristol Rovers must be one to count.
Charlie Cooper is not the only new signing at the club, and the
addition of fellow Birmingham player Reece Brown is one. The former
England U.20 international will hopefully be a good one. Watch out
for Lee Harvey Collins as well.
Forest Green will open the season at home v. Barnet. They are
favourites to win this first game and hopefully it will be fun with
"Mini Cooper's" at "The New Lawn" this season, best of luck.
