Wayne Rooney to Everton, Premier League trophy to Goodison Park ?

DATE: 12.07.2016 - SOCCERVOICE - NEWS - SEASON 2016-17

Few players return to the club they left, and really just spend a life at another club in between, but that's the Wayne Rooney story

Few believed that he would be a key player under the new team established at Man Utd. At the age of 32 you might be looking at a year or two, but to be part of a long term future plan looked out of the picture.

Last season was a bit of a fall for Rooney, losing his starting position both for England and Manchester United. Both Mourinho and Southgate decided to leave Rooney out despite not saying that the captain of club and country was out of the picture.

A return to full international duty looks out of the picture at the moment, but Jermain Defoe was taken back at the age of 35, so the door is not locked completely and of course playing time and success at Everton could change the situation.

Wayne experienced everything at Manchester United and played in the World Cup and Euro's for England. He won everything possible, adding the Europa League and League Cup this season to complete his fantastic collection.

Few believed Wayne Rooney would return to Everton, before the rumour started to circulate in January. Since then talk has been on and off for a while and to see the deal completed must be fantastic for Koeman and Rooney.

Everton are at the moment building something special, with a number of fantastic youngsters coming through and then players like Rooney, Jagielka and Williams giving the squad something of a perfect balance.

Leicester City were 5000/1 to win the Premier League, and did. Everton might not be at that odds but maybe up to 500/1 if you make a bet. But looking at their squad and knowing that you have a Premier League winner in the side at the moment, makes this an interesting topic.

Leicester City, Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and Everton had a player or two with that experience when starting the season, Someone with that hunger and taste knows what it is, and will be of great importance, not shivering when you are looking from the top down to the teams below.

At Leicester, Robert Huth was a previous winner, while Danny Simpson, Danny Drinkwater, Ritchie De Laet and Matty James all had been at clubs while they were winning the PL trophy.

Peter Withe, Jimmy Rimmer had the same experience at Aston Villa, while Brian Clough added people like John McGovern, John O'Hare, Archie Gemmill and Larry Lloyd to his squad, all with a title or two under their belt before joining Forest.

When Everton won the trophy in 1985, a number of the players had a previous life at Liverpool. Alan Harper and Kevin Sheedy both new what it was like to being part of a league winning mentality.

This season will be an exciting one, and maybe Everton is the club to be next in line to win a Premier League trophy, they have added one of the ingrediences needed to lift a trophy, few or none in modern time has done without the experience in place.

A list of Premier League winning clubs, with players who had previous experience of winning the league title. The list has one player picked, but in the teams who won, many had a long list of players who had won before.

Damien Duff ! is a player in the list, but he joined Blackburn the season after the triumph, but must have known in the years after what the pressure and belief was like in a league winning group of players.

When Everton won their first title since 1970, back in 1985, Kevin Sheedy ! and Alan Harper !, who both were signed from Liverpool were only reserve team players at Anfield, but they were very much part of the squad at Anfield and played briefly in the first team.

Alan Hinton ! was a junior at Wolves when they won their last title in 1959, and not a player in the first team at Wolves by the time they won they league title. The rest of the names were good title winners in both camps.

So to have a former title winner in your squad or several of them can be something to consider if you are out to win the league title, without that ingredience in your squad, you are not likely to go all the way.
