Where are they now, the managers from 10 years ago





The 2010/2011 season is close, but what has happened to the managers that was in charge in the Premier League 10 years ago, just before the start of the 2000/2001 season article continues

Arsenal had Arsene Wenger in charge and he is still with the club. His position at the club is rock solid and he can stay as long as he would like.

Aston Villa had John Gregory in charge. He left the club in 2002 and has since then been in charge of Derby, QPR, Maccabi Ahi Nazareth and is today manager at Israeli club FC Ashdod.

Bradford City played their 2nd season in the Premier League and lost their manager Paul Jewell in front of the season and appointed his assistant Chris Hutchings. Hutchings was sacked during the season and Jim Jefferies came in.

Chris Hutchings followed Jewell around and took over from him at Wigan and Derby. Hutchings is today a manager at Walsall a job he has had since January 2009.

Jim Jefferies is a Scot who has great success north of the border. Before he joined Bradford he was with Hearts, he returned to Scotland and stayed with Kilmarnock from 2002 to January 2010 when he again was appointed manager at Hearts.

Charlton had Alan Curbishley as their boss. Curbishley was in charge at Charlton from 1991 to 2006. He has since been in charge at West Ham, a job he left in 2008. Curbishley is today not involved in football management.

Claudio Ranieri took over from Gianluca Vialli at Chelsea in the early stages of the season. Ranieri stayed at Chelsea until 2004 and is today manager of AS Roma. Gianluca Vialli returned to management at Watford, but since leaving the Hornets in 2002 he has not been involved and works in TV.

Coventry played their last season in the Premier League in 2000/2001 after being in the top flight since 1967. Gordon Strachan was in charge and left just a few months into the 2001/2002 season. Strachan has since had great success as manager at Southampton, Celtic and is now with Middlesbrough.

Derby County was a Premier League team 10 years ago and survived relegation ending in 17th place. Jim Smith was in charge and had been so since 1995. Smith resigned from his position as Derby manager in October 2001. Smith has since leaving Derby been involved at several clubs as assistant manager and coach and went back to Oxford in 2006 and is still in the club working as a director of football.

Everton ended 16th that season with Walter Smith as their manager. Smith left Everton a year later when David Moyes came in. Smith is today manager of Rangers and has since leaving Everton been an assistant at Manchester United, and in charge of Scotland before returning to Ibrox.

Ipswich ended the season in 5th position. George Burley had a fantastic season in charge of the tractor boys and being name manager of the season in the Premier League. Burley experienced a difficult time afterwards and he left the club in 2002. Burley has this summer been named manager of Crystal Palace and has since leaving Ipswich had manager positions at Derby, Hearts, Southampton and Scotland.

Leeds was in the top flight and at this time one of the most exciting teams in the league. They ended fourth under the management of David O'Leary. O'Leary managed to bring in a great group of young talent, but was sacked in the summer of 2002. O'Leary has since leaving Leeds been in charge at Aston Villa from 2003 to 2006 and is today manager at United Arab Emirates club Al Ahli.

Leicester City appointed Peter Taylor as their new manager after it was clear that Martin O'Neill had accepted an offer from Celtic. Taylor got a fantastic start to his job at Leicester seeing the club as the leader of the Premier League in October 2000. Taylor never managed to build on that great start and was sacked early into the next season after a dreadfull run without any wins. Taylor is today in charge of Bradford and has been at several clubs since leaving Leicester.

Liverpool had Gerard Houllier in charge. Houllier stayed at Liverpool until 2004. He has since leaving Liverpool been in charge of Lyon. He is today not involved in football management at the age of 62.

Manchester City got relegated from the Premier League in 2000-2001 ending 2nd to bottom. Joe Royle experienced a strange time in charge of Man City, being involved in 2 promotion and 2 relegations. He was dismissed in May 2001. Royle has since leaving Man City been in charge of Ipswich from 2002 to 2006 and in a caretaker role at Oldham in the latter stages of the 2009-2010 season. Royle is not involved in football management today.

Manchester United was as they are today managed by Sir Alex Ferguson. Ferguson had a fantastic season and led the team to a new Premier League title.

Middlesbrough had Bryan Robson as their manager. Robson left the club after the season and has since been in charge at Bradford, WBA, Sheffield United and is today the manager of the Thailand national team.

Newcastle was managed by Sir Bobby Robson. Sir Bobby was in charge at Newcastle from 1999 to 2004. Robson died in July 2009.

Southampton was a Premier League team back in 2000 and ended the season in 10th place. Glenn Hoddle was in charge but left the club in March 2001 and Stuart Gray came in as a caretaker for the rest of the season.

Glenn Hoddle has since leaving Southampton been in charge at Tottenham and Wolves, but today he is not involved in football management.

Stuart Gray has since leaving Southampton been in charge as a caretaker manager at Wolves and Aston Villa and was in charge at Northampton from 2007 to 2009. Gray is today a coach at Burnley.

Sunderland had Peter Reid as their manager. Reid had great success at Sunderland taking the club to promotion twice and finishing 7th in 2000/2001. Reid left his manager job at Sunderland in 2002 and has since then been in charge at Leeds, Coventry, Thailand and now he has newly been appointed manager at Plymouth Argyle.

Tottenham was managed by George Graham until march 2001 when the club appointed their former great Glenn Hoddle as their manager. Graham has not been involved in management since leaving Tottenham in 2001.

Harry Redknapp was in charge at West Ham and had been so since 1994. Redknapp left the club in May 2001 and left the hot seat to Glenn Roeder.

Redknapp has since leaving West Ham been in charge at Portsmouth twice, Southampton once and is now with Tottenham Hotspur.

Glenn Roeder has since leaving West Ham in 2003 been in charge at Newcastle and Norwich. Roeder left Norwich in January 2009 and has since then not been involved in football management.

10 years are gone, but most of the persons who were in charge in the Premier League back then is still involved in football management.
