Ron (pic) and Peter Springett
were brothers and both proffesional goalkeepers in the English game
during the 60's and early 70's. Ron made 33 appearances for England and
was part of two World Cup squads, in 1962 and 1966.
Ron played his last game for England in a friendly against Norway in one
of the preperation games in front of the 1966 World Cup.
Peter was the youngest of the two brothers and entered the proffesional
stage more or less as a replacement for his brother at QPR. Ron had
previously been with QPR but his best years in football was with
Sheffield Wednesday.
Ron played 384 games for Sheffield Wednesday before his return to QPR in
May 1967. Peter who by then had become a well respected goalkeeper at
Loftus Road, made a move the opposite way.
This is a unique transfer, seeing two brothers, both playing in the same
position, being swopped in a transfer which made the oldest brother
returning to the club he played for before.
Ron is the most famous of the two brothers and he was one of a group of
former England internationals receiving their winning medals from the
1966 World Cup 43 years after.
Ron was never fielded in the 1966 World Cup, and only the 11 playing the
final received medals 43 years ago. It was fantastic to see him and his
fellow squad members receving the medal at Downing Street on the 10 the
of June 2009.
Ron played for QPR, Sheffield Wednesday during a career starting 1955
and ending in 1969. Peter had a good career with QPR, Sheffield
Wednesday and Barnsley, despite being at Hillsborough during a difficult
time for the Owls, seeing them relegated to the third tier in English
football.
Peter Springett died in 1997 after a four year cancer battle.
