SPL is the name of the top
division in South Africa. This league have 16 teams and they play from
August to May. Last seasons winners was Supersport United.
Only one player from Supersport United was included among the 23 players
in the South Africa 2010 World Cup squad. Defender Bongani Khumalo
is the only one, he is also the captain of Supersport.
Mamalodi Sundowns and Kaiser Chiefs ended on 2nd and 3rd
place.
Supersport United has been the winner for the last three seasons.
They are based in Pretoria and their coach is South African
Gavin Hunt.
Hunt played most of his career with Cape Town based Hellenic FC. A team
that previously had players such as Jeff Astle, George Estham and Arno
Steffenhagen in their ranks. Hellenic FC no longer exists and is today
kown as Tanda Royal Zulu.
Supersport owners are M-Net. The club has a relationship with English
Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur.
The legendary clubs are Orlando Pirates and Kaiser Chiefs,
both clubs based in Johannesburg. They are also among the most winning
teams in South Africa.
Mamelodi Sundowns who was 2nd this season, is also based in the Pretoria area.
They are owned by
billionaire Patrice Motsepe, and described as Chelsea of South
Africa. Sundowns has been among the best teams in South Africa in recent
years.
Vasco Da Gama is a club based in Cape Town. This club was founded by the Portuguese
population in the city, back in 1980. They are also a well
established SPL team.
