Der Bomber, a German that never missed his target

Gerd Muller was nicknamed Der Bomber. His goalscoring ratio at club and international level was phenomenal, so why is he forgotten when you talk about all those great names from the past, article continues

Johan Cruyff and Franz Beckenbauer was the big names of the early 70's. They were the symbols of two teams that won everything in Europe wih Ajax and Bayern Munich.

When Germany played Holland in the 1974 World Cup final, it was Gerd Muller who scored the winner, he was the player that made the difference.

Muller had an amazing career and he scored 398 goals in 453 games for Bayern Munich. He also managed to score more goals than caps as a player for West Germany. Muller scored 68 goals in 62 games at international level.

When Bayern Munich signed Muller from his home town club TSV 1861 Nordlingen, it was based on his goalscoring skills. He joined Bayern in 1964 at the age of 18, with a record of 51 goals in 32 appearances for TSV.

Muller was part of a team at Bayern that produced some fantastic football and won many honours, but without the goalscoring skills of Der Bomber, the story could have been different.

Muller left Germany for a life in the NASL in 1979, and played a couple of seasons with Fort Lauderdale Strikers. He managed to score 40 goals in 80 games.

His name will for always be in the record books, but in some way he has never been mentioned as one of the real greats of football, he should be, with a fantastic abillity to score those vital goals and never miss his target when he got the oppertunity to score.
