Steve McClaren left England under his famous umbrella, but he has
shown at Middlesbrough and Twente that he can turn rain to sunshine.
It was not the most glamerous club in Europe that came in, when
Steve McClaren went out in the rain of football after a miserable Euro
2008 qualification.
England never qualified and not to get England through was really enough
to get the sack. But life can change and in the world of football it can
happen almost over night.
McClaren had a great career running, first as a coach at Derby and Man
Utd and later as a manager at Middlesbrough. He did a great job at
Riverside and combined it with a role in Sven Goran Eriksson's England
coaching staff.
When Eriksson stepped down after the 2006 World Cup, a number of
candidates were interviewed for the England job. McClaren was approaced
and was flattered with a chance to become the next England manager.
The former Hull, Oxford and Derby player left his postion at
Middlesbrough, a club he had steard to an UEFA Cup final and a League
Cup win.
McClaren showed early that had great abillities as a coach and his track
record, before his England stunt, was great. This is was noticed Twente.
Twente had done ok in the Dutch league, the season before McClaren
arrived, and had qualified for the Champions League and this was
probably what triggered McClaren to take up the position.
McClaren managed to get the Dutch club in to the Quarter Finals of the
Champions League. And in his first season in charge Twente ended 2nd in
the Dutch league. The success was there to see.
A club that in 2002 was close to "going under" was among the top teams
in Europe with "The Umbrella Man" in charge.
The season 09-10 started well, but the Champions League ended in failure
losing out to Sporting Lisbon in the group stages.
Steve McClaren demaned full focus on the Eredivisie and it ended with
the first ever league championship for Twente. "The umbrella man" had
turned rain to sunshine, as he did at Middlesbrough.
After two successful seasons in Dutch football a new challenge is in
front of McClaren, taking over at German club Wolfsburg.
A club simular to Twente and Middlesbrough. Wolfsburg are "nobodies" in
German football and this might be the best possible way for McClaren to
work wonders with his "Umbrella Formula".
Can McClaren again turn rain to sunshine ?
