Bayern Munich was not one of the
favourites to reach the Champions League final in Madrid, but for those who
knows their football history the German success is probably not a big
surprise.
Few clubs has played a more important role in the modern history of
football. This is a club that fascinates with their growth and position
in Europe.
Franz Beckenbauer is an important an integral part of that success and
the way he captained this team in the great years in the 70's makes both
club and player unique.
There was something "monumental" over Beckenbauer and his nickname "Der
Kaiser" makes it all come together. Beckenbauer captained both club and
country to success in the European Cups and the World Cup.
Franz Beckenbauer is still president of honour at Bayern and his team
mate Uli Hoeness is the man running the club as a president. A former
great Karl Heinz Rummenigge is in charge of one of the companies within
the club.
Important players from the 60's, 70's and 80's are involved as coaches
or advisors. This is how the family stay alive and makes continuity in
the work at the club.
From the oustide things can look a bit strange, becuase Beckenbauer is
also known as one of the clubs biggest critics. He is both involved in
TV and as a columinst in the newspaper Bild.
This would have been impossible in other countries, but Beckenbauer's
position is so strong in Germany that he can do almost what he wants.
Beckenbauer won everything possible both as player and coach. He was the
captain when West Germany won the World Cup in Munich in 1974, he also
won the World Cup in 1990, then as coach of the Germany team. He was in
charge with Germany hosted the 2006 World Cup, described as the best
World Cup arrangement ever.
Everything this man gets involved in becomes great successes. With this
CV you will become immune. Beckenbauer and Bayern Munich has in some way
build each other.
A lot had been mediocre at Bayern Munich before Beckenbauer, and with
him and the carismatic goalkeeper Zepp Maier and centre forward Gerd
Muller they managed to win the Bundesliga and the European Cup.
This happened almost 40 years ago, but something the team today are
build on. The stars of today, with Arjen Robben and the others are what
counts now, but there will never be any doubt about those who formed the
club to what it is today, or who made Bayern Munich famous world wide.
"Der Kaiser" and his men has not lost ther power, yet.
