English goalkeepers no longer
best in the World

-

England are going to the World Cup with one missing link, the goalkeeper. This is Fabio Capello's nightmare and every team with ambitions to win the World Cup needs a World class goalkeeper

Peter Cech, Mark Schwarzer, Edvin van der Sar, Brad Friedel, Pepe Reina and Shay Given are all fantastic goalkeepers and they all play in England, but none of them can play for England.

They are all very important players for their clubs and are all playing in Europe. The number of foreign goalkeepers in the Premier League is a problem for the national team.

England have a proud history when it comes to goalkeepers with Gordon Banks, Ray Clemence and Peter Shilton leading the pack of the fantastic goalkeepers who used to play at top level and also in clubs winning trophies.

If you look back in the last 10 years or so, very few English goalkeepers, who play today, have experienced the thrill of winning a big trophy.

David James was in goal for Portsmouth when they won the FA Cup in 2008, besides that Ben Foster has been in goal for Man Utd in one Carling Cup final, so that's it.

Peter Shilton, Gordon Banks, Peter Bonetti, David Seaman and Ray Clemence were all goalkeepers that won trophies and got the experience of playing in Europe and in those big games. Today they are all foreigners in those big games.

None of the current English goalkeepers are regarded World Class. David James at his best can be regared as a very good goalkeeper. The problem with James is that he has a very low lowest level of performance and can give away goals for free.

There are a number of goalkeepers considored as possible first choices for England and that is of course also a reason why you can't find the one and only choice for the job, no one stands out in the crowd.

The best possible solution for Capello is to go with experience with Robert Green, Paul Robinson and David James the likely names to be included.

Birmingham loan man Joe Hart has recently been outstanding, but with little experience at full international level it would be a big gamble to give young Hart the job during the 2010 World Cup.
