Five years ago in the Championship, where are the promising players now
-

English football is today a global game, with players arriving from all areas of the globe. But is that really the true story

Players are often signed from foreign countries, but has it come anything good out of the Championship trademark and can this league recruit to the Premier League.

Richard Stearman (pic) left Leicester in front of last season and joined Wolves. He was a young and unproven player five years ago, today a Premier League player with Wolves.

Brian Jensen, is a legend at Burnley and has played for the Lancashire club since 2003. He has proven to everyone that he can cope with life at the highest level.

James Collins was at Cardiff five years ago, and has since then played for West Ham and Aston Villa. There is no doubt that Collins can cope with life in the Premier League.

West Ham defender Daniel Gabbidon is today a key player at West Ham and is established and proven at Premier League level.

England international Darren Bent was at Ipswich in 2005. Darren is today one of the best forwards in the English game and a proven goalscorer in the Premier League.

Gary McSheffrey used to play for Coventry and today a player in the Premier League with Birmingham. Midfielder Matt Jarvis was at Gillingham and has later joined Wolves and today in the Premier League.

Clarke Carlisle is today with Burnley and a player who have contributed in the Premier League this season. He was at Leeds United in 2005.

Stoke has a number of players from lower leagues in their squad one of them is former Leeds midfielder Danny Pugh. Pugh has not been much involved this season.

Leicester was the club Joey Gudjonsson played for in 2005. He moved to AZ in Holland and later to Burnley and helped them up to the Premier League in front of this season. Gudjonsson has also played for Aston Villa and Wolves at Premier League level.

Andy Marshall is today at Aston Villa. The goalkeeper played for Millwall in the Championship in 2005. Marlon King, who was sacked from Wigan earlier in the season, played for Nottingham Forest in 2005.

Dickson Etuhu, Dave Nugent and Tyron Mears were all at Preston 5 years ago. Today Etuhu is with Fulham, Nugent and Mears at Burnley.

Carlo Nash also played at Preston, and today he is with Everton. The well travelled goalkeeper has played at a number of Premier League clubs.

Dan Shittu who is now at Bolton, played for QPR in the Championship 5 years ago. His time at Bolton has not worked out as well as everyone would have expected.

Marcus Hahnemann, Steven Sidwell, Nicky Shorey, Dave Kitson and Ibrahima Sonko were all at Reading back in 2005, and today they are all playing for Premier League clubs. Hahnemann is with Wolves, Sidwell and Shorey at Aston Villa, Kitson and Sonko with Stoke.

Mike Pollitt played for Rotherham and the goalkeeper is today at Wigan. Pollitt has been a bit in and out of the Wigan team but today looked up on as a player that has the abillity to play in the Premier League.

Phil Jageilka was with Sheffield United back in 2005. His move to Everton has also given Jageilka a chance to play for England, and the defender could be in the frame for a place in South Africa this summer.

Michael Tonge is another Blades player now playing in the Premier League. His chances at Stoke has been limited but he must be regarded as a Premier League player.

England international Ben Foster was in the Stoke squad five seasons ago, but he had not made his first team debut. Steve Simonsen is still at Stoke today as he was 5 years ago.

Scottish international Steven Caldwell is today a key player in the Burnley defence, five years ago he was part of the Sunderland team that won the Championship.

Dean Whitehead joined Stoke in front of this season after a long spell with Sunderland. He had played one season for the Black Cats in 2005 after joining from Oxford United.

Watford had a very special player on their books, a youngster named Ashley Young. Young is today an England international and a key player at Aston Villa.

Leighton Baines, Jimmy Bullard, Jason Roberts were all at Wigan, and today Baines is with Everton, Bullard at Hull and Jason Roberts is at Blackburn.

Jolean Lescott amd Wayme Hennessey were both at Wolves. Lescott has done fantastic at Everton and Manchester City, he has also established himself as a member of the England squad. Hennessey has played a number of games in goal for Wolves and also at full international level with Wales.

This shows that players from the 2nd level can be good enough for Premier League, despite people telling the opposite.

Who would have thought that this line up five years ago would be a team that could have been one of the best in the Premier League.

GK. Ben Foster, Manchester United, England

RB. Jolean Lescott, Manchester City, England
LB. Nicky Shorey, Aston Villa, England
CD. Phil Jageilka, Everton, England
CD. James Collins, Aston Villa, Wales

CM. Jimmy Bullard, Hull
RM. Ashley Young, Aston Villa, England
CM. Steven Sidwell, Aston Villa
LM. Leighton Baines, Everton

CF. Darren Bent, Sunderland, England
CF. Dave Nugent, Burnley. England

This team is proof of fantastic quality that five years ago played at Championship level. David Moyes and Martin O'Neill are also examples of great management, spotting talent at a lower level and make them progress in the right enviroment.
