-

When you look back in the World Cup history and history of English football you always find interesting stuff. The games that took place at The White City Stadium in London will for always be special events

The stadium was build in 1908. The stadium was modern and the first to host a distance marathon. The stadium was closed in 1983 and demolished in 1985.

The stadium hosted greyhound races and speedway, gymnastic events and in 1931 it was the home ground for London club Queens Park Rangers. The capacity was 68 000 and was considored a technical marvel.

The ground has also been the home of the rugby team Wigan Highfield. Wigan Highfield changed their name to London Highfield.

The fact that this was a major ground who could host a number of events, made it reserve arena for the 1966 World Cup and hosted the game between Uruguay and France.

The stadium was from 1976 to 1978 the home of speedway team White City Rebels.

Today the ground is gone and you will find a big building hosting the BBC radio headquarters.
