-
The mighty
owls are still playing their games at Hillsborough, but the wonderfull
ground with such a proud history has not hosted Premier League football
in almost 10 years

Sheffield Wednesday has
a proud history winning the league four times. They have also won the FA
Cup and the Football League Cup. The last time they won a trophy was
back in 1991.
Sheffield Wednesday belongs in the best party and had a great run during
the 80's and 90's but the last number of years has been difficult.
Brian Laws has been the manager at Sheffield Wednesday since 2006 but
financial difficulties and almost no money to spend has limited his
chances to push for promotion back to the Premier League.
They used to be big spenders and splashed out heavy transfer fees for
big names and the record transfer buy is the £ 4,5 million paid for
Paolo Di Canio when they signed him from Celtic in 1997.
Howard Wilkinson established the team in the top flight during the 80's
and Ron Atkinson also made a great job at the club. David Pleat and
Trevor Francis was also in charge at Hillborough during the 90's and
especially Francis had a good period.
Their best position in the Premier League is 7th. With a number of great
players in their squad it was not really a surprise to see the owls in
the top half of the Premier League season by season.
Chris Woods, Chris Waddle, Des Walker, Nigel Worthington and Viv
Anderson are players that were influential and the club managed to
attract the best names. A number of foreign stars such as Di Canio,
Gilles de Bilde, Petter Rudi and Benito Carbone also contributed.
The likes of Mark Chamberlein, Carlton Palmer and Mel Sterland must also
be mentioned.
The club managed to establish a structure that made them a solid Premier
League team.
Wednesday has been a bit of an elevator club over that last 50 years.
They belonged to the best party from 1959 to 1970. The club reached the
1966 FA Cup final. Everton was on the opposite half in the final and won
the game 3-2.
The club had a number of profield players during the 60 period. Don
Megson, Peter Swan, Jim McCalliog, Tony Kay and goalkeeper Ron Springett
were all among the best players in the top flight.
Ron Springett was in the 1966 England World Cup squad. He was back then
regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, but a certain
Gordon Banks kept him on the England bench. Springett was capped 33
times, and England number one before Banks.
Sheffield Wednesday managed to win many hearts in the 60's, but
experienced a black period in the 70's. Wednesday played in 3rd division
from 1975 to 1980. A new great era looks certian to be around the corner
at Hillsborough and hopefully we will see the blue, black and whites
back in the Premier League in a season or two.
