BBC reports that Man
Utd will sign Michael Owen on a one year pay as you play deal. The big
question ism, why would Sir Alex give Owen this fantastic oppertunity.
Owen has everything to win. He is under no pressure and he knows that
Man Utd have the quality in Rooney and Berbatov that probably will make
them a top team also this season.
The problem for Sir Alex is that the player he has signed has not been
fit for the last four seasons, why should he be able to get back to his
best at Old Trafford ?
Sir Alex has shown over the years that he can get the best out of many
players and has turned fortunes around for people such as Eric Cantona,
Edwin van der Sar and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Cantona never manage to convince anyone in France that he was a world
class player. Leeds manager Howard Wilkinson let the French player leave
for around £1 million.
Erwin van der Saar was forgotten at Fulham and made a fantastic return
to the top of European football and is today regarded as one of the best
goalkeepers in Europe.
Ruud van Nistelrooy was also a massive gamble, being out of the game for
almost a season before joining the club, and we all remember his impact
at Man Utd.
Teddy Sheringham is another example of a very experience player to join
Man Utd and make a very big impact, doing a fantastic job at the club,
despite being a bit of a bench warmer in periods.
Michael Owen at this best, in the company of great players, could shine
like ever before. He can be lightening and he knows how to score goals.
The big question is, will he manage to keep up with the standards at Man
Utd and stay fit.
