Daily Mirror reports
today that Burnley are linked with Sheffield Wednesday forward Marcus
Tudgay. Owen Coyle is, according to the reports, ready to pay £5 million
for the player.
This would have been almost impossible to even have dreamed about a year
ago, to see players in possible transfer moves to Burnley for £5
million.
Those who remember a bit about the previous group of players that played
for Burnley when they played at the highest level from 1972 to 1976,
really enjoy seeing the Lancashire club back.
Burnley is almost like the "home of football", a place were tradition
and culture means more than money and luxury. Owen Coyle should get a
lot of credit, but former managers Stan Ternent and Steve Cotterill must
also be credited for their great work.
Working on small budgets, bringing in the right players at the right
time, selling the right players for the right amount of money, ref. Kyle
Lafferty to Celtic for £3.5 million, that brought in the cash to sign
new good players like Steven Thompson, Chris Eagles and Martin Paterson.
Owen Coyle will introduce a group of players to the Premier League that
are mostly unknown to this arena, but hopefully they will manage to show
what Burnley is all about.
Players such as Ralph Coates, Dave Thomas, Leighton James, Brian Flynn,
Geoff Nulty, Ray Hankin, Martin Dobson, Willie Morgan and several other
stars got their breakthrough at the highest level with Burnley.
Let's hope that the current group of players can follow up and make a
name for themselves in the Premier League and not just let us live on
the memorie of the past.
Welcome back Burnley, it will be an interesting new addition to the best
party.
