Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (35) played his last game yesterday in his
testimonial against a competetive Espanyol. The Norwegian is officially
a retired footballer, but things can change
Mark Higgins, was a highly respected central defender at Everton during
the late 70's and early 80's, and he had to retire from the game at an early
age.
The player was declared football invalid after a long and terrible injury
nightmare at Everton. Ron Atkinson, manager at Man Utd in that period, was
known for unexpected moves, and the signing of Higgins is by many described
as the most remarkable signing ever to be done at Old Trafford.
Higgins joined Man Utd after Atkinson paid out his insurance fee which was £
60 000, and he was back in proffesional football at a higher level than ever
before.
Higgins didn't play more than eight games for Man Utd, but he stayed in the
game and moved to Bury for £ 10 000. Who sold him, Sir Alex Ferguson !
Higgins had not passed his 30th birthday and by the age of 32 he was
retired, so this is just an example of a player that at an young age managed
to make a remarkable comeback and stayed on playing for six more seasons
after taking out his retirement from football.
There are not many that returns to top flight football after injury
problems, but there are examples of players like Higgins, that manage to
come back.
