Tottenham, will they ever be a league
winner again ?

Managers comes and goes, faithfull fans waiting for a revelution but
when you think Tottenham are on the way to a new glory era, they start
shivering or are hit with injury problems
Tottenham have it all. They have a wonderfull stadium, a great fanbase
and financial muscles to be up there with the best, but seldom delivers or
manage to play well over a full season.
They managed to win the League Cup last season, after a great win over
London neighbours Chelsea. But after that win, Ramos and his men suddenly
started to lose the grip and their league form dipped.
Tottenham were a great team in the 60's and early 70's, managed to win the
FA Cup a few times during the 80's and 90's and then in 1999 and 2008
winning the League Cup.
Tottenham were among the favourites to reach the UEFA Cup final last season,
but stumbled against oppositions you would believe was to weak to defeat
Spurs.
Juande Ramos has a high mountain to climb in his restruction of the club.
The Tottenham squad must be the most unbalanced in the whole Premier League.
Strange signings have been done over the years of players that so far have
made almost no impact.
They describe their goalkeeper situation as criticial, and are constantly
linked with a group of players. They missed out on Scott Carson, who joined
WBA, why didn't they try to sign him ?
In defence they struggle with heavy injury problems and at the moment five
or six Tottenham defenders have been linked with other clubs. They have
about 15 players to cover four positions in the back so there are no real
surprise that a load of them wants to move on.
In midfield there are talent, but the sale of Michael Carrick was a blow,
since he is one of the best in the game, why they missed out on Claude
Makelele is another question. Makelele, despite being 35, could have done
fantastic in a balancing role in midfield at White Hart Lane.
Up front both of their best strikers are linked with moves to other clubs.
Robbie Keane is believed to be on his way to Liverpool, while Berbatov is a
target for Man Utd.
Neil Lennon looks a bit out of the picture under Ramos, and the former
England international, still a very young man, could be on his way out of
the club.
Tottenham have always had great talent in their teams, but for some reason
there has always been a missing link. Since the early 70's a lot of men have
tried to find the right formula, but no, they have not managed to get it
right.
In the late 70's after coming up during the 77-78 season, Osvaldo Ardiles
and Riccardo Villa was signed. Ardiles became an instant hit, but injuries
stopped him from being a player that could help Tottenham winning the
league, with problems to stay fit for a full season. Villa was never really
a great hit at Tottenham and spent a lot of time out of the team either with
injuries or form problems.
Glenn Hoddle was also playing for Tottenham during this period, but with a
unstable defence, lack of goalscorers and a goalkeeper problem, no one
mentioned the club as a real championship contender.
During the 90's players such as Paul Gascoigne and GarY Lineker played for
Tottenham, but both players struggled a bit with injuries and with so big
stars at the sidelines there were no one to fill the gap.
Today there is no real "great" players at Spurs. Keane and Berbatov are both
good players, but not really a striking force you would believe could win
the league for you. But if they decide to sell both of their top strikers,
they might be in dangour even to get among the top 10 teams.
Patience is the answer at Tottenham. Their best man is probably their
manager, and then you have a great possibillity to get a good team over a
period of time.
Some of their young talents can blossom in the right team, and players such
as Modric, Bent and Jenas can if they are getting the chance, become top
quality. We just have to wait and see what the new mastermind at White Hart
Lane will do, let's be patient and see if he is getting the chance to build
stone by stone.
