Man Utd copied by Liverpool and Real Madrid

The recent Cristiano Ronaldo saga, gives you a feeling that "tapping up" players might be the way to win battles for their signatures.

article continues q

The Times reports that Real Madrid, despite being reported to FIFA by Man Utd, has done nothing wrong. But why should Ronaldo suddenly, out of thin air, start to get questions about a move to Real Madrid. The process of tapping up is complex and in a way difficult to prove.

The fact that Cristiano has a Spanish girlfriend who desperately would love to live in hear home country, might be one thing that could unsettle Ronaldo. Why does it start when Ronaldo leaves Manchester to play in the European Championship ?

Keane and Barry tapped up by Liverpool ?
Recent rumours about Roy Keane and Gareth Barry joining Liverpool is all in the category of "tapping up" players. Liverpool's local newspaper Echo starts to snowball with an article about Keane and the fact that Liverpool could move for the player.

This is nothing new in football and the fact that the rumours starts rolling is based on comments done mostly to the local press or via player agents.

The press gets a link to something and the snowball starts rolling. If players can't handle the situation in the right way, they will be cought up by the press and get in difficulties.

The situation with Gareth Barry is a bit tragic really. The player himself wants to join Liverpool, but as long as he is under contract with Villa he should stay silent about his "dreams" and just wait.

Liverpool would like to strengthen their team and the situation regarding Gareth Barry shows how "ugly" this business can be. Barry is at the moment suspbended by Villa. A bid is not yet accepted and the player has in some way managed to unsettle both clubs by comments made to the media.

Liverpool have one part to talk to and that is Aston Villa, no one can approach a player without talking to his club first. If a bid is turned down, then there is no deal. The player himself just have to wait. If Barry had played by the rules there would not have been any problems.

Spanish girlfriends and the dream of your life
Cristiano Ronaldo and his Spanish girlfriend might want to leave Manchester for Madrid, everyone can undertstand that, but in the World of football things are different. You cannot move if the club would like you to stay. You have a contract and that's it.

Tapping up is a known strategy to unsettle rival clubs and at the same time maybe manage to get a player joining you instead of staying where he is or join another rival.

You have two options in todays football. Sign a contract that is short term, and wait for a chance to leave for free when your contract expires or wait for the club to accept offers received from other clubs.

If you are unsettled, tell your manager, not the press.
The real problem is, certain players show how easy they can be "tapped up" and with a "money hungry" agent you will not get the advise needed to stop the talking, since the talking can both give the agent more money, the player a better contract and unsettle the club and the manager so that he goes along with a sale.

Man Utd tasting their own medicine
We all remember how things went on and on, when Owen Hargreaves joined Man Utd in front of last season. Bayern couldn't convince Hargreaves and he left a season after the rumours about his move started.

The player desperately wanted to join Man Utd, he made no secrets about it, and finally he got the chance to leave Bayern Munich, who in the first place might have liked to keep their English midfielder.

Chelsea used the same tactics when they signed Ashley Cole from Arsenal. Things went on and on, and in the end things became reallity.
